Test 3 Results

On 10/26/2011 AMS Math League students took a second 7th grade level contest as a practice. The 7th grade test covers slightly less material than the 8th grade test, but is no less difficult (in my opinion).

To get an idea of what the contests are like see the samples at the central math league website.
This histogram shows how AMS students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade performed on the Grade 7 contest.

The attached histogram shows that the 8th graders regained their supremacy over the 6th and 7th graders this time. I thought this test was the same difficulty level as the last one, but the average was actually a little lower (at around 18.5).

The score of 35 was a lot higher than all the others.
There were a few that scored a lot better, and a few that scored a lot worse. Some of the variation can be attributable to luck since these are multiple choice questions, but I think there may be other factors at work that I wish I understood. One student dropped from a 20 to a 7! One should expect a score of about 10 if they guess randomly.
