Test 7 Results

On 1/14/2012 AMS Math League students took their second 8th grade level contest as a practice. The 8th grade test covers slightly more material than the 7th grade test, but the difficulty level is about the same.  The average was about 18/40 (min was 10/40 and max was 25/40).

This first chart shows the number of students that answered each question correctly. Keep in mind that these are multiple choice questions with four answers. Since there were 18 students taking the test, its safe to say that they had a lot of trouble on problems where 4 or fewer students got the correct answer. There were 13 problems where 4 or fewer students answered them correctly. They were problems 8, 15, 16, 19, 25, 26, 28, 33, 36, 39, 40. I will go over these problems in the next session. I am pleased to say that no student missed problems 3 and 13. You can see by the fewer correct answers later in the test that either the problems were harder or they were running out of time.

This next chart shows the same information, but I normalized the numbers so that each colored segment represents the % of that grade level that got the question correct.

This last chart shows the same information as the last, but the bars are shown clustered instead of stacked so it is easier to compare the percent correct across grade levels. Since there were only 3 8th graders taking the test, the results are not as reliable as I would have liked.

To get an idea of what the contests are like see the samples at the central math league website.
This histograms below shows how AMS students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade performed on each problem of the test. I did it this way so I could understand which problems they were missing and which they were getting right.
